Cryogenic Hoses & Pipes
Convection, conduction, and radiation are responsible for heat loss during liquid nitrogen transfer. Therefore managing heat is essential to avoid product loss.
At Rutherford & Titan, we use a combination of cryogenic hoses, vacuum-jacketed pipes, an ingenious support system, and multi-layered insulation to prevent heat leaks during transfer.
Cryo Hoses
Cryogenic hoses — also called “Metal hoses ” — are purposely built to transfer cryogenic and high-pressure liquified gasses and can withstand extremely low temperatures.
They are composed of a stainless steel corrugation braided with a protective mesh-type sheath made of stainless steel wire. The braid can be single-layer, two-layer, or three-layer, depending on the margin of safety (working pressure).
We recommend using cryo hoses for short distances that are well insulated and shed from direct sunlight.
Vacuum Jacketed Hoses
Vacuum jacketed hoses are the most cost-effective and thermally-efficient method for transferring liquefied gasses.
These hoses consist of two pipes, an inner-carrier hose in which the cryogenic liquid is transferred and an outer hose that supports and seals the vacuum.
The space between the inner and outer hose is evacuated, preventing heat transfer and evaporation.
VJ pipes are our go-to solution. You’ll save thousands of dollars on your industrial gas bill while ensuring the safest operations.
- Choose VJ Flex for standard applications, long-distance, …
- Choose VJ Armored for extra safety when working pressure exceeds and angles of 30° or less.
Copper Pipes
Copper is the most inexpensive method of transferring liquefied gasses. It’s commonly used in heating systems and refrigerant lines for its heat-exchange properties.
Copper allows liquified gas to evaporate quickly, resulting in a huge supply of waste. When used for liquified gas transfer, it must be carefully insulated with extra layers of xx or xx. This results in lesser but still considerable supply loss.
At Rutherford & Titan, we don’t recommend using copper pipes with liquified gasses. Use it when strict budget restrictions apply and for very short distance transfers. Upgrade whenever possible.
